My Best Friend is My Husband and a DIY Guy

By on September 29, 2017

Above, my best friend, Joe (my husband), and I stand on the seawall at Rockland Harbor in Maine. Our 7-day break is allowed by my book being at the publisher (finally!) and our desire to visit this beautiful coast. I lived in this area for 2.5 excellent years and am so glad to be sharing it with him.

Over the 4.5 years in the making of At Home In the Real World: A Manual for the Modern Woman in an Unstable World, we’ve ventured down an intrepid path together. He’s game, been a great sport, and shown tremendous support. We learned Bulldog Jeet Kune Do (and still spar at home). He’s a DIY guy who made our wooden shutters and installed plastic glass for home security. He’s been my bad guy model in a pinch. And together, we eat stuff we shouldn’t. Everything shown below is either in my forthcoming book, or informed by it!

Thank you, Sweetheart!

We were in good hands with Keith Bushy and the late Bob Chapman who taught us Bulldog Jeet Kune Do in Bob’s garage. Here, Joe’s learning to get out of a neck hold from behind. Palatka, FL

One of our exterior doors has a large expanse of glass. To prevent breakage, he installed a sheet of Makrolon (plastic glass) over it. We beat it with hammers prior to install, it barely flexed. With the plastic off, the view’s fine. Still working well after 3 year

Joe fabricates a heavy-duty Old World shutter like we saw in Germany two years ago. It locks from the inside. Great window security on our rear porch.

I had to show Joe my favorite (and most helpful) firearms dealer, Altra Firearms. Their building is made of cargo containers. As an architect, I knew he’d be interested. Grove City, PA

In the illustrations for Unarmed Self Defense, my brother Ab was my Body Targets model, up until this move. Joe stepped up to the plate for the Groin Grab, Squeeze, and Twist! Pittsburgh, PA

My husband understands that, at times, I hang out with badass good guys and learn things like Basic Knife Techniques. Here I am with Steve Schwarzer, Master Bladesmith. Palatka, FL
