When it comes to personal safety, there’s a very dangerous assumption that you may hold near and dear. Most people do. It’s this:
“The police will protect me.”
But that's not their job.
I’m writing a book called At Home In the Real World
. It recognizes that the world around us is increasingly unsettled, and that our homes are extensions of our lives that we need to strengthen.
Why am I writing this? Because the bubble I lived in had been breached with gunfire, statistics, and reality sandwiches. I'll get to that, but suffice it to say, it left me a little afraid, deeply unsettled....and in want of solutions.
If you lived in the city, and heard gunfire on and off for a few years, about a half mile away, and then one day it came ridiculously close to your house, your first reaction may be an intense desire to move. Mine was!
