A lot of people feel increasingly unsettled in America. The divisive political campaign, fewer jobs, and signs of our nation’s troubled economy, is taking a toll on the national psyche. I suggest that we replace worry and fear (for the safety of our homes and neighborhoods) with personal skills, tools, and strengths. Calamity May helps homeowners and apartment dwellers do that….
My book, At Home In the Real World, covers products and DIY projects to strengthen your home or apartment. It then explores self defense in the home: improvised weapons, 13 unarmed strikes; and a balanced discussion on firearms for self defense in the home. When you understand your options, do your best to deter home intrusion. Then, choose self defense that fits your capabilities.
“Suzy, I Think I Want a Gun”
Several women have approached me lately, who’ve expressed an interest in owning a gun for home self defense. One of them, Rose, has been a close friend for 30 years. Without hesitation, I chose to help her because I know her temperament and abilities; she’s organized and careful; and has good eye hand coordination (okay, she crushed me in racquetball). And I understand one of her primary motivations: her mother, Marge, is in hospice care in her home.
To me, Rose is a good candidate for those reasons, and one more: she and her husband have installed reasonable prevention measures to keep bad guys out.
They have a home security system, motion detector lights, and high-quality deadbolts on all exterior doors. She consistently locks them and windows at night, and keeps her garage door closed and locked. They’ve put significant effort into keeping bad guys out. They can now turn their attention to self defense–should someone breach their castle walls.
Check out 3 prevention measures I’ve covered in my blog:
You always want prevention, before you ever face the dire need to defend yourself.
I’m practicing with excellent mentors, and have enrolled with a nationally-recognized organization to be a certified firearms instructor by early 2017. My focus: appropriate firearms (and ammunition) for self defense in the home. Stay tuned….
