At Home in the Real World AWARENESS DEFENSE HOME PREVENTION

Your Home is Your Castle: Eliminate Surprise. Deter Access. Defend If Necessary.

By on September 8, 2017

The illustration above is Windsor Castle from the 17th century. It shows a prominent round structure (red dot ), known as a ‘keep’. Fortified castles and cities have existed for thousands of years, and I’ve chosen to look at home security through the lens of Norman-influenced defensive castles, built in England by William the Conqueror beginning in 1066. Why? They’re big on detecting pillagers off in the distance, they’re hard to close in on, harder still to break into, and if their walls were breached, defensive measures were intense. Much was at stake then. 950 years later, that hasn’t changed.

Windsor Castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1070 sits above the River Thames in London, England. The keep remains the castle’s tallest structure to the left (red dot). Windsor’s been occupied continuously for 947 years.

Strong and Long Standing

All Norman keeps, (including Windsor Castle, William’s own residence), held what pillagers and foe wanted: plundered booty, wealth, food, wine, animals, munitions, and important people. Keeps also served as residence to the local lord and his lady. Keeps were constructed on tall, man-made mounds, surrounded by wooden walls. One could only gain entry through a tightly controlled access point. Keeps were the most prominent and guarded part of Norman castles. Of the Norman castles in ruins today, it’s always the keep that’s most intact, when the rest is half-buried rubble.

Your Home is the Keep

So I say to ye, Your home is the Keep, you, and your family inside are what’s precious. The booty you’ve collected over the yours is yours to defend. But there’s much you can do before ever resorting to the dire need for home and self defense. You want to Eliminate Surprise (be alerted to unwanted presence on your property). Deter Illegal Entry (lock windows and fortify doors). If a bad guy, or enraged ex- does breach your castle walls: Have a Plan (prepare for home and self defense long before that dark moment).
