Affordable home security: 4.5 stars after 4 years of use.

By on May 5, 2017

It’s Spring and my exterior doors and windows are getting exercised. How do I know? I have monitors on each to detect movement. The swing of a door, the up & down of a window sash–every time it happens, a little ding sounds from a base station upstairs.

I never thought I’d like a home security system. They smack of paranoia, contractual obligations, false alarms, and high fees. On the other hand, burglary statistics in our neighborhood were startlingly high considering the Norman Rockwell street we live on. My search for a Suzy-friendly system ended at Simplisafe. My inner geek read all about the products offered and how to tailor them to our home. I spent hours on their User Community forum, getting feedback from real users. Like single Moms who installed highly customizable systems, or, big families that moved their system with them to the next house. Impressive.

We went for it. In 2013, we dropped $360 on motion sensor monitors for 5 windows, 3 exterior doors, and 1 hallway; 2 panic buttons; a base station, keypad control, and 2 remote control keychains; and, an exterior siren of mega decibels. Joe installed it all in less than an hour. Cool ! Our whole 1st floor was covered and the basement door.

How window sensors work.

4 years later, I can report back: the system works great. It still does exactly what it’s supposed to. There’s are only two catches. First, the velcro that attaches a sensor to a window sash, and the other side to the window frame failed after 3 years. But that’s an easy fix. (Door sensors velcro are all fine). Second, the humans who live here are hard on things, especially doo-dads attached to keychains. My keychain looked like something from the duct tape sessions on the Red Green Show!

Simplisafe at Calamity May’s house gets 4.5 stars. The system works as promised.  And, the velcro problem was easily remedied; and, Simplisafe replaced our keychain remote units.

Their web site is easy to navigate and is educational. Customer service is great. Their backup guarantees are impressive. Totally worth it for your house or apartment or vacation home.
